Husband’s Day or Bóndadagur in Icelandic is celebrated every year on 25 January 2023.
It is a custom born from the old Viking month ‘Þorri’. In the past, husbands would celebrate the day by going out wearing just a shirt and trousers with just one leg.
Today, partners will gift their male spouses something stereotypically macho or ‘Viking’, such as a leather apron for BBQing, craft beer or high-end beard oil.
The highlight of Þorri is the Þorrablót, a feast of old traditional Icelandic food to celebrate the pagan Gods.
Feasts are accompanied by alcohol, singing, and a much-anticipated satirical show by the local drama club.
More modern takes on the feast of Þorrablót include a leg of lamb, fried bread, dried fish, and as much fresh butter.
