Customers looking for a quieter UK break can visit Scotland in September and October, when the summer crowds have eased. September and October bring fewer visitors, better availability and plenty of reasons to travel, from autumn walks to new cultural exhibitions.

Edinburgh and Dundee both offer walkable city centres, strong hotel options and easy access to the outdoors, making them practical choices for a short autumn break.
Edinburgh after the Fringe
Edinburgh takes on a different pace once the Festival Fringe ends in August. The Royal Mile becomes easier to explore, tables are easier to secure, and visitors can see the Old Town’s main attractions without the peak summer crowds.
Agents can combine the city’s historic sights with time outdoors. Arthur’s Seat and Holyrood Park are close to the centre, while the Royal Botanic Garden and Water of Leith Walkway offer gentler alternatives.
The Water of Leith route passes through Dean Village and Stockbridge, making it easy to include independent cafés and local shops along the way. From 4 November 2026, V&A Dundee will host David Bowie: On Tour. The exhibition will feature around 100 objects from the V&A’s David Bowie archive, including material that has not previously been displayed publicly.
Dundee can also be used as a base for a longer autumn itinerary. Montrose Basin, located further along the coast, welcomes thousands of migrating pink-footed geese from Iceland and Greenland during the season. Its visitor centre has panoramic views across the reserve, with telescopes and binoculars available.
Agents can also add a day in Highland Perthshire, around an hour from Dundee, for forest walks, lochs and scenic drives during the autumn months.
