Mehmet T. Nane has been named Chair of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Board of Governors.
Nane is also the Vice-Chairperson of the Board (Managing Director) of Pegasus Airlines, and the first Turkish Chair of IATA.
He has taken over the role from Robin Hayes; the announcement was made at 78th General Assembly currently being held in Doha, Qatar and will serve until June 2023.
Speaking on the appointment, Mehmet T. Nane said: “I’m honoured to take on this position at a time when the industry is emerging from our worst downturn and to be the first Turkish Chair of IATA.
“A huge part of this honour is that it represents how far Turkish civil aviation has come.
“The aviation industry has been through one of the toughest tests in its history over the last few years.
“Despite all the challenges, every one of the stakeholders in the industry is working with maximum effort.”
Nane also commented that IATA and the industry are taking steps towards improving gender equality and sustainability.
He said that IATA’s agenda over the next 12 months include supporting CORSIA at the upcoming ICAO Assembly and refining the pathway to Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050.
The organization is also working towards broadening participation in the 25by2025 gender diversity initiative.
He also announced that the 79th IATA General Assembly and the World Air Transport Summit will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from 4-6 June 2023.
“We will be delighted to welcome global aviation professionals in our beautiful country, hosted by Pegasus Airlines,” said Nane.
