Wizz Air has announced that its joint initiative with not-for-profit organisations to help Ukrainian refugees travel to the UK has been extended till the end of June.
The partnership with Choose Love, The Shapiro Foundation, The Steve Morgan Foundation and USPUK was launched in May 2022 with 10,000 free tickets and is in support of the UK Government’s ‘Homes for Ukraine’ visa scheme.
To date, there are still 4,500 free tickets available for Ukrainian refugees to travel to the UK.
The airline said that extending the initiative until the end of June allows more Ukrainian refugees flying from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to travel to the UK.
Since May, the initiative has made free travel available to over 5,000 refugees, enabling them to settle in the UK with their sponsors.
As of 14 June, the UK Government has issued 88,000 visas to Ukrainians under its ‘Homes for Ukraine’ visa scheme.
Over 51,800 have already arrived in the UK, and the extension of this initiative will allow even more Ukrainian families to be welcomed into the UK in the coming weeks.
The Wizz Air free tickets are available on a total of 61 routes that the airline operates from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia to the UK.
A free ticket would include one hand luggage item and one checked-in luggage item (up to 32kg) per person.
József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, said: “We are pleased that Wizz Air is able to continue to support Ukrainian refugees as part of the UK Government’s ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme.
“By extending our offer of free tickets until the end of June, we hope that many more Ukrainians will reach the UK and be connected with their sponsor.
“Our hearts are with the Ukrainian people during this time of crisis, and we want to play our part in these efforts by providing a free, safe, and welcoming journey to anyone who needs it.”
Edward Shapiro, Managing Trustee of the Shapiro Foundation, said: “We are pleased to have supported flights for over 5,000 Ukrainians over the past month.
“As the horrific situation in Ukraine continues, we appreciate the ongoing commitment by Wizz Air and our philanthropic partners to extend the free flight offer for the UK’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.”
