The airport transfers experts at hoppa have analysed dozens of European getaways, scoring each on factors such as cost of a hotel, average price of a pint, alongside trip advisor reviews to reveal the cheapest European getaways this winter.
Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, has ranked as the best budget European winter break. Prague offers low-cost accommodation, food, drink, and transport options compared to other major European cities.
The city is known for its beautiful historic buildings, cobblestone streets and the Old Town Square, which has a huge bustling plaza with street performers, vendors and cafes. It’s the perfect place to visit this time of year, as the Christmas markets operate from November to January.
Bansko, a Bulgarian town at the foot of the Pirin mountains, has ranked second for the best European winter break. Bansko is a gateway to numerous ski resorts and an alpine landscape that offers affordable accommodation, food, and drinks, especially compared to its neighbouring resorts.
This mountain town has quietly become a favourite for those who seek a European ski holiday without the typical price tag, making it the perfect budget winter break.
Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria, has ranked third for the best European winter breaks. Sofia also offers much lower costs for accommodation, food, and drinks compared to other European capitals.
The city, known for its beautiful architecture, also offers numerous free activities, such as walking tours that allow visitors to experience the city’s culture and history. These tours include visits to the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which dominates the city’s skyline and is a must-visit.
Chris Harrington, Managing Director at hoppa, comments: “While there is often a big emphasis on summer holidays, winter is a brilliant time of year for a trip away. Most destinations are decorated for the festive season and have a host of events throughout the season, which makes for a great atmosphere to enjoy in the winter months.
It’s great to see destinations like Prague, Bansko and Sofia being credited as some of the best budget winter breaks in Europe. These cities offer a variety of cultures, history and landscapes, and while they may offer lower costs, you won’t have to compromise on experience.
“Money can be tight around Christmas, and these cities can offer lower prices on everything from flights to accommodation, airport transfers to food and drinks. Lesser-known destinations also offer fewer crowds and an overall more relaxed experience for travellers.”
