Taking the car allows for flexible travel, making it easy to explore multiple destinations in one trip, from city breaks to coastal drives and major summer events, all within a few hours of Calais.
Normandy – coastal walks and pet-friendly escapes
Not far from Calais, the Grand Site des Deux Caps offers one of northern France’s most accessible coastal experiences, with walking routes between Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez delivering panoramic sea views with Irish Ferries also offering access to partner hotel stays across the region.
The area is ideal for travellers bringing a pet, with plenty of nearby pet-friendly hotels to choose from. Irish Ferries also makes travelling with animals easy, with dedicated onboard facilities including a pet den, a safe, ventilated space where pets and their owners can relax together throughout the journey.
Northern France – Paris city breaks
Paris, located approximately 3 hours’ drive from Calais, offers an easy extension for a three-day getaway, with summer bringing open-air events, riverside dining and late-night culture across the capital. Irish Ferries also offers convenient access for travellers booking a Disneyland Paris package holiday, combining ferry travel with accommodation.
Belgium – summer festivals and major sporting events
Belgium sits just beyond northern France and can easily be added to a three-day itinerary. Just 2 hours from Calais, Belgium hosts Tomorrowland each July, one of Europe’s best-known music festivals, attracting global visitors including acts such as David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris and many more.
For motorsport enthusiasts, the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps takes place on 17 to 19 July, just over 3 hours from Calais, offering a key event for those planning a driving-focused trip.
Travelling with Irish Ferries allows passengers to bring their own car, avoid baggage restrictions and explore at their own pace, with onboard amenities including lounges, dining, retail and relaxation areas designed to make the short crossing comfortable.
Passengers can also upgrade to Club Class, which includes priority boarding and disembarkation, access to a quieter, more spacious lounge and complimentary refreshments including wines, spirits and a buffet selection of hot and cold meals. This offers an enhanced travel experience from the moment they arrive at the port.
