The first British holidaymakers have touched down on Australian soil on Monday 21 February 2022, as Australia’s border reopened to fully vaccinated travellers.
Northern Territory-based tourism operator, TV presenter and the start of his own upcoming Netflix series, Matt Wright, was on hand to welcome two non-stop flights from London arrived at Darwin Airport only hours apart.
QF2 and QF10 both departed London Heathrow and landed on the day Australia’s international borders reopened to leisure travellers worldwide.
Passengers on QF2 were greeted by Matt and chatted with the famous Aussie before transferring onto their connecting flight to Sydney. For the passengers from QF10, the longer stop allowed them to enjoy a reception that included an official Welcome to Country by The Youth Mill, a local Aboriginal cultural and education organisation, as well as refreshments and welcome cupcakes.
In Sydney, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan joined Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison at Sydney International Airport to greet many of the first international tourists to arrive in almost two years.
Travellers who arrived at Sydney International Airport were welcomed with live entertainment, Aussie themed gifts and a 75-metre ‘Welcome Back World!’ message.
“At Tourism Australia we are so excited to be welcoming back international visitors who make up a critical part of our visitor economy,” Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said.
“We know Australia remains an incredibly desirable destination for international visitors and we can’t wait to once again share all of the unforgettable tourism experiences we have to offer here in Australia.
“There is no doubt the last two years have been very challenging for the tourism industry, and whilst recovery will take a bit of time, operators can’t wait to say g’day and welcome back international tourists.”
Tourism Australia launched the campaign, Come and Say G’day – Don’t Go Small. Go Australia, into key Western markets, such as the USA and UK, ahead of the border reopening.
