Research has revealed the top 15 best global cities for active travellers and runners.
The study was conducted by performance footwear brand HOKA, with results based on seven environmental and external factors.
These include air pollution, traffic CO2 emission data, the number of green spaces, walkability, average temperature, humidity levels and water quality.
Based on the original analysis, Austria’s capital city of Vienna was named the most runner-friendly city, with a total score of 7.9 from a possible 10.
When considering additional factors such as the length of the drive from London, the number of outdoor activities, and the average cost of a hotel, Vienna ranks second.
Berlin takes the top spot for no-fly active holidays from the UK, with an environmental index score of 7/10, and the affordability of a hotel in August.
With a drive time of just over 13 hours from London, Berlin is the shortest distance to drive from the UK, with around 690 miles between each of the cities.
Once in the city, Berlin also offers the cheapest hotel on average, with a standard room in the centre costing holidaymakers an average of £120 per night.
As one of the flattest cities in the world, Berlin also has very low traffic CO2 emissions, only 2,419 gr per return trip, meaning better air quality runners.
With its low average temperature of 11.5°C and its 69% humidity level, this historic city is one of the best for runners, based on the seven environmental factors analysed.
Rounding out the top three no-fly cities for runners is Rome.
The Italian city is accessible by both car and train from the UK, with an average drive time of around 20 hours.
While both Rome and Berlin share a HOKA index score of 7/10, Rome is named as one of the best cities for runners thanks to the average temperature of 17.5°C, an air quality score of 12/100 and a walkability score of 99/100.
A hotel in Rome costs an average of £147 per night.
Lisbon comes in eighth. This city is the furthest from England’s capital, more than 1,300 miles to cover in an estimated drive time of 23 hours.
The Portuguese city is also one of the more expensive to stay in during August, with an average hotel room setting travellers back around £140 per night.
However, Lisbon shares a HOKA index score of 7/10 with Berlin and Rome, a 99/100 score for walkability and an average temperature of 18°C.
