Aruba At Christmas Time
On the Caribbean Island of Aruba, home to 102 nationalities, Christmas time is a cultural blend of festivities from around the world.
The arrival of Sinterklaas, on the 5th of December, kicks off the celebrations on the island, where children leave a shoe outside their door in the hope that it will be filled with sweets by Sinterklaas.
The end-of-year celebrations also include the Chinese Pagara ceremony, where firecrackers are lit to create a show of smoke and noise in an attempt to ward off evil spirits.
Food also plays a big role in these festivities; Arubans offer dishes like the Ham di Pasco, decorated with pineapple slices and bright red cherries.
Alternatively, Ayaca, which is originally from Venezuela, consists of cornmeal dough filled with meat and cooked in banana leaves resembling a wrapped present.
Gaita is an up-tempo musical arrangement performed live all over the island and Seroe Pretu also known as the ‘city of lights’, creates an impressive display of Christmas lights transforming the town.
At Christmas, Aruba embraces every tradition and any celebration that gives the islanders an excuse to throw a party!
