Geneva Tourism has announced the return of its enchanting Christmas markets – recently voted Switzerland’s best by European Best Destinations.
Visitors to Geneva this festive season will also have the opportunity to experience the historic Fête de l’Escalade celebrations.
Sports fanatics can take part in the annual Course de l’Escalade or the Geneva Christmas Cup, promising fun for the whole family this Christmas.
Explore enchanting Christmas markets
From 21 November to 24 December, the picturesque Quai du Mont-Blanc will transform into a magical winter utopia, with the iconic Jet d’Eau as a backdrop.
Visitors can wander through charming wooden chalets featuring unique gifts from talented local artisans and designers.
They can also indulge in a delicious selection of dishes from over 30 local restaurateurs, serving everything from mouthwatering street food to comforting raclette.
There is a wide range of family-friendly activities, such as the Christmas marching band, a concert from the Showband Les Armourins, and rides on historic steamships.
As night falls, guests can look forward to a lively DJ set at the Christmas Pub before heading to the charming Chalet for some warming fondue or embarking on a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Old Town.
Step back in time with the annual Fête de l’Escalade
Guests can experience a cherished Genevan tradition at the annual Fête de l’Escalade from 13 to 15 December.
They can witness the city’s transformation as it comes alive with the spirit of 1602, inviting guests to relive the triumph over invading French forces with a series of vibrant celebrations.
There will be colourful processions, period costumes, musket firings, and thrilling battle reenactments throughout the weekend.
Visitors can also enjoy beloved customs such as the smashing of a chocolate ‘marmite’ (cauldron) filled with marzipan treats, decorated in the city’s colours – red and yellow – as well as the coat of arms.
Embrace the outdoors this festive season
Guests can take on the annual Course de l’Escalade race, which will see runners take to the streets of Geneva’s charming Old Town on 07 and 08 December.
This exhilarating event unites runners of all ages, celebrating community spirit while showcasing the best of the city.
Guests can participate in races accommodating participants of all abilities, including juniors, walkers, and relays as well as races tailored to competitive runners. Registration is open until 18 November.
Not for the faint-hearted, guests can take the plunge this festive season and enter into the Geneva Christmas Cup, taking place on 21 and 22 December.
A two-day annual cold-water swim in the bay of Geneva, the 86th edition of the event is set to welcome more than 4,500 participants across two categories – one competitive and one comedic.
Supporters can enjoy warm drinks and festive merriment, while participants will have an opportunity to warm up in the wood-fired hot tub after their race. Registration is now open for both categories.
