Travellers flying with Icelandic airline PLAY can now add a stopover in Iceland when booking a transatlantic flight through PLAY’s website.

Customers travelling to either the US or Canada can use the feature to spend up to 10 days in Iceland before getting on their connecting flight at no extra cost.

This allows customers to explore multiple bucket-list destinations in Iceland within a single trip.

PLAY said in a statement that the self-bookable stopover option aims to “speed up and improve the customer experience.”

By expediting the booking process for those wishing to extend the layover in Iceland, it provides the passenger with “greater flexibility and control over their travel itineraries.”

This new offering is made possible due to PLAY’s hub-and-spoke model, which has continued to provide success to the airline since its inaugural flight in June 2021.

Now, nearing three years on, the airline is operating a modern fleet of ten aircrafts, made up of Airbus A320s and A320neo’s, with the average age of its aircrafts being a little over three years.

PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, says: “PLAY has taken advantage of Iceland’s location near Europe to bring travellers convenient flights and affordable fares, and now the stopover feature brings even more benefits to our passengers.

“Rather than having a few hours layover in Iceland, travellers can make a stop at this bucket-list destination for an extra day or week to experience everything our home country has to offer.

“Long stayovers are a win-win for both us and our passengers to enable exploration at a low price.”

PLAY operates from London Stansted and Liverpool John Lennon in the UK, flying to Reykjavik, Iceland and through to New York, Boston, Washington, and Baltimore in the US and Toronto, Canada.

The airline offers competitive pricing across all its markets and strives to make travel more affordable, with an impressive 83% on-time performance in 2023.
