However, it also offers an abundance of alternative winter activities for those seeking a different kind of winter holiday. As the winter season in the region won’t draw to a close until April, there is still plenty of time for travellers to discover their new favourite activity. See South Tyrol Tourism’s top five recommendations below:

Atmospheric Adrenaline – Tobogganing

For the travellers seeking adventure, the toboggan runs in Gitschberg Jochtal are guaranteed to get their hearts racing. Families, couples, friends and solo travellers alike will find pure enjoyment as they glide down the mountain, taking in the crisp air and spectacular Alpine views.

The Gitschberg Jochtal ski area features four distinct toboggan runs, offering something for everyone. Some provide gentle, confidence-building slopes that are ideal for children and beginners, while others deliver a faster, more exhilarating ride for those ready to embrace the thrill of the descent.

The Brimi Winter Run is one of the longest in South Tyrol at over 6.1 kilometres, starting at Nesselhutte and ending at Meransen, with an elevation gain of 421 metres. Toboggans are available to rent at the lift terminal, costing just 8€ per adult.

Hungry? Try Pichlerhütte, a cosy wooden restaurant serving traditional cuisine from the region, including their beloved South Tyrolian speciality, Knödel.

Active Tranquillity – Snowshoe Hiking

Snowshoe hiking is the gentlest of all winter sports, and Eggental presents a huge variety of routes to choose from; travellers are in complete control of their pace and the sights they want to see, perfect for those who want to unwind during their winter escape.

The clean Alpine breeze, the sunshine, and the panoramic views of the Latemar and Rosengarten massifs are guaranteed to provide an unforgettable experience. Travellers can book onto professionally guided group walks from only 10€ per adult. For travellers who are comfortable on their own, snowshoes can also be hired from local ski shops and hotels from 10€ a day.

Hungry? Try Latmor Alm, a cosy wooden hut run by a young boy, serving local, seasonal dishes at an affordable price. It is in the snow-covered Latemar Meadows and can be reached through a scenic 5,9km hike.

Alpine Identity – MMM Corones

For curious minds interested in discovering the secrets of the world’s mountains, the MMM Corones offers a perfect afternoon. Designed to provoke reflection, the space explores the evolution of equipment, the milestones of alpine history and the extraordinary physical and mental resilience demanded by the sport.

Through powerful storytelling and striking architecture, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for humanity’s enduring relationship with the mountains. A single adult ticket costs 14€.

Hungry? Try Rifugio Corones, a contemporary foodie hotspot blending traditional South Tyrolean, Ladin, and Italian cuisines into creative dishes using sustainable ingredients.

Artistry at Altitude – Lumen Kronplatz

For the creatives, located at an altitude of 2,265 metres on Mount Kronplatz, Lumen Kronplatz offers a dedicated, interactive space to explore the many perspectives of mountain photography.

Blending contemporary design with breathtaking alpine views, the museum features both permanent and seasonal exhibitions, inviting visitors to discover how mountains have been captured, interpreted and celebrated through the lens.

Complimentary guided tours are available daily, offering deeper insight into the stories behind the imagery.

One of the most talked about installations is the Room of Mirrors, an experiential space that plays with reflection and perspective, allowing visitors to engage with authentic artefacts while contemplating the sense of freedom and profound connection to nature that LUMEN seeks to celebrate. Tickets start at €17.

Hungry? Try AlpiNN, a fine-dining experience by three Michelin Star and Green Star Chef, Norbert Niederkofler, championing his ‘Cook the Mountain’ philosophy, using only regional, sustainable ingredients for its light, comforting dishes.

Alpine Wellness – Hay Baths

A traditional South Tyrolean ritual, hay bathing is a deeply restorative wellness treatment designed to detoxify the body, reduce fluid retention and stimulate the metabolism. Practised throughout the year, the hay is freshly cut from alpine meadows and carefully preserved to retain its essential oils, including thyme, mountain arnica and cinquefoil.

As the hay is immersed in warm water heated to approximately 40°C, it begins to release its natural active compounds, enveloping the body in soothing warmth and aromatic botanicals. The treatment promotes circulation, relaxes muscles and supports overall well-being.

Hay baths are also suitable for those with hay fever, as the damp hay does not trigger allergic reactions. In Seiser Alm, Hotel Heubad offers a 50-minute session starting at 45€. Hungry? Try Restaurant Turm, a prize-winning, gourmet restaurant serving South Tyrolean and Italian dishes.

Akin Adventure – Cross Country Ski

For those not wanting to abandon their skis completely, cross-country skiing offers a new dimension to the classic sport, relying on human power rather than gravity. Seiser Alm offers 80 kilometres of perfectly groomed double or quadruple tracks, with altitudes ranging from 1800 to 2200 metres, making it well-suited for both beginners and professionals.

With a less crowded, nature-focused environment and an emphasis on cardiovascular endurance, cross-country skiing is a fantastic workout with incredible views! Prices start at just 15€ for a day rental, and 10€ for an adult day pass.

Hungry? Try Nordic Ski Centre, a conveniently located restaurant with panoramic views, serving fresh South Tyrolean dishes.
