UK cruise holidaymakers have nominated The Colosseum in Rome as their favourite attraction to visit by sea.
The iconic Italian site, available to experience via Mediterranean cruise itineraries, was selected by 30% of cruise.co.uk customers as one of the excursions they most enjoyed on a European sailing.
The cruise specialist polled almost 900 people for the survey.
In second place was The Dubrovnik Walls in Croatia, which were picked by 26% of respondents. The walls date back over 1000 years and are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Third place was awarded to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, with Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia in fourth and St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City fifth.
The survey also revealed that cruise line-operated shore excursions are the preferred way to see the sights when travelling on a cruise.
45% of respondents favoured cruise line excursions, pipping the independent option, on 44%. 11% preferred third party-operated excursions.
Reason cited was peace of mind with scheduled timings which swayed their opinion, with almost 60% highlighting this as their main motivation.
Tony Andrews, cruise.co.uk Managing Director, said: “Cruise lines offer a wealth of iconic destinations and attractions to visit, so our respondents were spoiled for choice when naming their favourites.
“A number of the world’s most popular sites are accessible via ship, and it’s also worth keeping in mind that plenty of lesser-known gems can also be visited too.
“Our survey also highlights the preferences and motivations of cruise passengers when it comes to booking shore excursions.
“Whether they opt for the convenience and peace of mind offered by cruise line-organised trips, or to explore independently, there is always plenty of choice to meet their preferences.
“Cruises offer a unique and wonderful way to explore the world, at an exceptional value. No matter how guests wish to discover the attractions on offer, cruising is unbeatable in terms of both choice and convenience.”
