The UK has tightened travel and mask rules over the new Omicron variant, said the BBC in an article published on Sunday.
According to the BBC, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that face coverings will become mandatory again in shops and on public transport in England from this week as part of measures to target the new coronavirus variant.
Travellers entering the UK will also have to undergo PCR tests, and all contacts of new variant cases will have to self-isolate, even if fully jabbed. The Prime Minister had said that these measures are “temporary and precautionary” and will be reviewed again in 3 weeks.
The article outlined that everyone entering the UK (other than those coming from the Common Travel Area that covers the Channel Islands and Ireland) will have to take a PCR test by the end of the second day after their arrival and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.
The UK Red List has also been updated to include South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini Angola, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia.
Those arriving from the above countries will not be able to enter the UK unless they are UK or Irish nationals, or UK residents.
Travellers coming from Red List countries will then have to pay for and self-isolate in a pre-booked government-approved hotel for 10 days.
