Wizz Air Reports “Sky High” Passenger Numbers

Wizz Air reported “sky-high passenger numbers” between January and December last year.

The airline said it carried almost 46 million passengers during the calendar year of 2022, which represents a 110.2% growth year-on-year.

In 2022, Wizz Air said it continued to expand its network, adding 275 new routes to 142 destinations across Europe and beyond.

The airline welcomed 27 brand-new Airbus aircraft over the course of last year, taking the size of its fleet to 177.

In 2022, the airline’s average annual carbon intensity amounted to 55.2 grams, which is the lowest number ever recorded by Wizz Air for one calendar year.

Wizz Air also added new Airbus A321neo aircraft and replaced older aircraft and is working on fuel-efficiency projects to explore the potential for hydrogen-powered aircraft and the supply of sustainable aviation fuel.

The airline continues to strengthen its position as “one of the world’s most sustainable airlines” as it further reduces its environmental footprint by 25% per passenger kilometre by the end of the decade.

Wizz Air now operates more than 90 routes from across the UK and has announced 20 new routes from London Luton and Gatwick Airport throughout the year.

New destinations include Istanbul, Antalya, Dalaman, Tallin, Hurghada, Prague, Sharm El Sheikh, Agadir, Marrakesh, Grenoble, and Verona.

It also added two additional aircraft to its fleet, reaching 15 million passengers carried from London Luton Airport and one million passengers carried from Gatwick Airport.

In total, Wizz Air UK said it carried a record nine million passengers to and from the UK in 2022.

Marion Geoffroy, Managing Director, Wizz Air UK said: “We are proud of what Wizz Air has achieved in the last calendar year.

Despite the well-documented challenges faced by the entire travel industry, in 2022 we flew a record number of passengers, entered new and exciting markets, established a new AOC, welcomed new aircraft to our fleet, and were awarded Europe’s Most Sustainable Airline by CAPA.

“In the UK specifically, we have continued to grow our network, having launched 16 new routes in the past year, which reflects our commitment to bringing improved connectivity to our customers.

“We want to thank our loyal customers for continuing to choose Wizz Air for its low fares, diverse route network, great onboard service, and ultra-efficient aircraft and wish to welcome many more passengers on board in 2023”.
