New Turner Walking Trail Opens In Guernsey

A new exhibition and walking trail that has opened on the Islands of Guernsey, celebrating the work of renowned artist J.M.W. Turner.

The new trail has opened to explore the influence of the Islands of Guernsey on J.M.W Turner, following the success of 2023’s campaign celebrating 140 years since Renoir visited Guernsey.

Works in one of Turner’s sketchbooks have been revealed to have been produced during a visit to the Islands.

Entitled Finding Turner, Art for Guernsey’s new trail – which opened on 20 April 2024 – will be accompanied by an exhibition on the renowned Romantic artist’s trip to Guernsey in 1832.

Guests can discover the landscape that inspired Turner through a self-guided trail past several installations and frames across the Islands.

Local artist James Colmer was commissioned to create a series of works in response to the Romantic artist’s sketches, forming an initial exhibition and enhancing the trail.

Later this year, three international artists will also visit the Islands to respond to the scenes where Turner sketched, with their works to be featured in a 2025 exhibition.

The Turner trail will also be available to explore via the VisitGuernsey app, which was launched in 2023 and which provides a number of themed walks around the Islands.

Also joining the app for 2024 are five new historical routes, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings and the Islands’ role in World War II, as well as the Renoir Walk.
