From paranormal getaways and holidays designed to help couples clear the air, to fitness trips that forge new friendships and destinations chosen entirely by mood, Brits are set to shake up the traditional holiday in 2027.

  1. Trip to the Beyond: Brits look to the ‘other side’ for their next adventure

According to Booking.com, the appetite for darker, more mysterious travel is on the rise, with more than two thirds (68%) of UK travellers interested in experiences that confront the paranormal head-on, from ghost hunts and haunted locations to supernatural encounters.

Nearly half (49%) would seek out an experience in the hope of speaking to someone on the “other side”, while 51% are interested in experiences exploring the afterlife, death or spirituality.

  1. Social Currency: Money matters when choosing who makes the holiday guest list

44% of British travellers have reconsidered who to invite on a trip because of differences in spending, while 48% have experienced tension or disagreements during a trip because people had different expectations around money.

Almost a third (32%) admitting they’ve removed someone from a travel group due to these differences. 66% of parents are keen to holiday child-free so they can spend more on themselves.

  1. Sweat Synergy: Solo travellers turn to sport to make lasting connections

More than two-thirds (68%) of UK travellers who have headed off on a solo trip, say that a shared physical activity or challenge has led to a lasting friendship or connection, as sport and fitness change how solo travel looks.

More than half (53%) would be interested in joining a community of like-minded people while travelling, while 51% are interested in travelling to take part in a fitness or sporting event – as going solo doesn’t necessarily mean going it alone.

  1. Trailside Therapy: Couples take to the trails to talk things through

More than half (51%) would consider taking a trip to resolve conflicts or arguments, and 78% say at least one holiday activity helps them have honest or difficult conversations.

The activity that is ranked most effective: Simply walking or hiking together (31%).

  1. Vibe Check(In): Brits choose where to go based on how they want to feel

More than three quarters (78%) of UK travellers would choose a destination based primarily on the mood they want from their trip, while 74% would use a search tool that recommends destinations based on how they’re feeling.

Gen Z are particularly open to taking this one step further. Three quarters (75%) would share data from their phone or wearable with a travel provider to help personalise their trip, compared with just 24% of boomers.

  1. Plot Twist Trip: Travellers break out of their comfort zones with unexpected escapes

In 2027, Brits are breaking out of their travel comfort zones, with nearly three quarters (73%) interested in taking a trip specifically to do something completely out of character.

Part of the fun is keeping friends and family guessing, with 38% actively wanting to surprise them with their travel choices. Meanwhile, more than a quarter (28%) have previously deleted or avoided posting about a trip because it felt too predictable or ordinary.

Ryan Pearson, UK and Ireland Regional Manager at Booking.com, comments: “British travellers are entering 2027 with a more open-minded view of what a holiday can be: 78% say they would choose a destination based on the mood they want to create, while 73% are interested in travelling specifically to do something out of character.

“From working through life’s tensions on a walk together to seeking out experiences that challenge and surprise us, the traditional holiday formula is being replaced by trips that feel more personal, purposeful and memorable.
