Canada’s most picturesque rail routes:

The Canadian has been ranked the most scenic rail journey in Canada, and it’s also the route capturing growing interest from British travellers. UK searches for “The Canadian train” have surged by 130%* in the past month, reflecting a wider spike in demand for immersive, long-haul rail holidays.

Stretching 4,466km between Vancouver and Toronto, it is also the most talked-about Canadian rail route on social media, with more than 11,000 posts across platforms. That’s equivalent to nearly 2.5 posts per kilometre, driven by its ever-changing landscapes and landmark-filled itinerary.

In second place is the ‘Journey Through the Clouds’. The two-day journey runs from Vancouver to Jasper, passing through the Fraser Valley and Hell’s Gate, with travellers able to enjoy gourmet dining and uninterrupted panoramic views along the way. With more than 5,800 social media posts, it continues to stand out as one of Canada’s most shared scenic experiences.

Completing the top three is the ‘First Passage to the West’, which connects Vancouver and Banff. The route is considered one of the country’s most visually striking, passing close to or through seven natural wonders, including Glacier National Park. It takes two days to complete and attracts more than double the average social media engagement of comparable routes, with 5,760 posts versus a study average of 2,756.

Rob Holmes, North American travel expert at Journeyscape, comments on what travellers should consider when planning the ultimate rail experience:

“Canada’s scenic rail journeys stand out because they combine scale with accessibility, but what this data really highlights is that the best experiences come from routes that layer multiple landscapes into a single trip.

“Travellers often underestimate just how vast the country is, so choosing a route like The Canadian or one through the Rockies lets you experience that diversity without the complexity of planning multiple stops.

“From a planning perspective, it’s worth booking well in advance, particularly for peak seasons like late spring to early autumn, and considering upgrades such as panoramic or dome carriages, which can significantly enhance the overall experience.

“Building in time to stop over in key locations like Jasper or Banff can turn a scenic journey into a more immersive, multi-stop adventure rather than simply a point-to-point trip.”
